Powering Global Urology Education with a Unified Digital Platform

Challenge

BJUI’s previous platform no longer met the needs of a growing, international subscriber base. The design and underlying technology were outdated, resulting in a poor user experience for subscribers and a heavy administrative burden for staff.
Key challenges included:

  • Manual data entry and synchronisation across multiple systems
  • Disconnected subscriber, payment, and learning data
  • Limited self-service options for subscribers and partner associations
  • Difficulty managing subscriptions, onboarding, and communications at scale

BJUI needed a modern, reliable platform that could support seamless onboarding, reduce admin workload, and integrate cleanly with their external learning management system (LMS).

Solution

BrightMinded designed and built a fully integrated digital platform combining WordPress, CiviCRM, and a secure subscriber portal, with automated synchronisation to BJUI’s external LMS.
The new solution allows BJUI to:

  • Manage subscribers, payments, and communications in one central system
  • Automate onboarding and subscription management for individuals and partner associations
  • Enable lead contacts at member associations to manage their own subscribers, removing manual admin
  • Allow subscribers to register, update details, and manage payments through a self-service portal

We also broke down data silos by consolidating content from BJUI’s legacy platforms. Some content is managed directly by the BJUI team, while other resources are automatically imported from their journal publisher, ensuring subscribers always have access to the latest material.
Using open-source technology gave us the flexibility to develop custom CiviCRM extensions, including tailored subscriber management and payment flows. One key enhancement supports regional pricing, offering reduced subscription rates for users in low- and middle-income countries based on World Bank data, helping BJUI widen access to critical learning resources.

Impact

The new platform has transformed how BJUI manages its subscribers and delivers education. Manual processes have been replaced with automation, improving data accuracy and freeing up the internal team to focus on growth, engagement, and content quality.

Subscribers now benefit from a faster, more intuitive experience, with easier access to journals, learning resources, and personalised communications. With integrated analytics and engagement tracking, BJUI can better understand subscriber behaviour, improve retention, and deliver timely, relevant information to the professionals who rely on their resources.
