Empowering Global Volunteer Management: How IFRC and Red Cross Societies Use Civi-Go to Centralize Volunteer Engagement
The Challenge
Volunteer data was previously siloed and managed inconsistently:
- Different platforms or spreadsheets used by each national society.
- Little to no integration between systems.
- Limited real-time visibility across countries or regions.
- Lack of digital infrastructure in rural areas.
This fragmented setup made it difficult to:
- Track volunteer onboarding and participation.
- Respond quickly to emergencies with accurate data.
- Share best practices or centralize reporting.
The Solution: CiviCRM on Civi-Go
Civi-Go, developed and hosted by Ixiam, is a secure, cloud-based deployment of CiviCRM tailored for nonprofits. For IFRC and its partners, it offered:
- A centralized volunteer database with user-level access controls.
- Online self-registration portals for new volunteers, accessible via mobile.
- Automated workflows for validation, communication, and assignment.
- Support for multiple languages and regions, including rural connectivity.
- Dashboards and custom reporting tools to track KPIs at local, national, and global levels.
Key Outcomes
By deploying a shared CiviCRM instance via Civi-Go:
- Volunteer engagement increased significantly, especially in underserved regions.
- Administrative time decreased, thanks to automation and real-time access.
- Cross-border coordination improved, enabling faster mobilization during emergencies.
- Data integrity and privacy were preserved in accordance with GDPR and IFRC policies.
Who’s Using It
This is an ongoing project lead by Spanish Red Cross, with the growing adoption of several Red Cross National Societies across the globe, such as:

- Liberia Red Cross
Supported by Spanish Red Cross, French Red Cross, UK Red Cross, Swedish Red Cross and IFRC.
Each organization tailored the platform to their local needs while contributing to a shared volunteer ecosystem that promotes knowledge exchange and operational transparency.
